چکیده

[1] We constrain the spatial variation of P‐wave (tP*) and S‐wave (tS*) attenuation by inverting 190,000 teleseismic P‐ and S‐wave spectra up to 0.8 Hz. These spectra are derived from 250 deep earthquakes recorded at 880 broadband global and regional network stations. The variance and ratios of tP* and tS* values are consistent with PREM’s upper mantle velocity and Q structures and conventional tP* and tS* values. High attenuation is resolved beneath stations in tectonically active regions characterized by high heat flow. Low attenuation marks stable continental regions. The maps of tP* and tS* correlate well with the variations of tS* computed and inferred from (1) the most recent surface‐ wave Qmodel and (2) a thermal interpretation of shear‐wave velocity tomography. This indicates that maps of body‐ and surface‐wave attenuation reflect intrinsic attenuation and variable temperature in the mantle. Citation: Hwang, Y. K., J. Ritsema, and S. Upper mantle Q and thermal structure beneath Tanzania, East Africa from teleseismic P wave spectra

[1] We measure P wave spectral amplitude ratios from deep-focus earthquakes recorded at broadband seismic stations of the Tanzania network to estimate regional variation of sublithospheric mantle attenuation beneath the Tanzania craton and the eastern branch of the East African Rift. One-dimensional profiles of QP adequately explain the systematic variation of P wave attenuation in the sublitho...

Mantle Heterogeneities and the SCEC Reference Three - Dimensional Seismic Velocity Model

We determine upper mantle seismic velocity heterogeneities below Southern California from the inversion of teleseismic travel-time residuals. Teleseismic P-wave arrival times are obtained from three temporary passive experiments and Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) stations, producing good raypath coverage. The inversion is performed using a damped least-squares conjugate gradient met...

Crust and upper mantle P- and S-wave delay times at Eurasian seismic stations

Median crust and upper mantle Pand S-wave delay times, based on residuals for teleseismic Pand S-wave arrival times included in the groomed ISC/NEIC database of Engdahl et al. [Bull. Seism. Soc. Am. 88 (1998) 722] are estimated as functions of time and azimuth for Eurasian seismic stations. The effects of source and lower mantle 3-D structure on the station residuals are corrected by ray tracin...

Mantle seismic structure beneath the MELT region of the east pacific rise from P and S wave tomography

Relative travel time delays of teleseismic P and S waves, recorded during the Mantle Electromagnetic and Tomography (MELT) Experiment, have been inverted tomographically for upper-mantle structure beneath the southern East Pacific Rise. A broad zone of low seismic velocities extends beneath the rise to depths of about 200 kilometers and is centered to the west of the spreading center. The magni...

Variational Principle and Plane Wave Propagation in Thermoelastic Medium with Double Porosity Under Lord-Shulman Theory

The present study is concerned with the variational principle and plane wave propagation in double porous thermoelastic infinite medium. Lord-Shulman theory [2] of thermoelasticity with one relaxation time has been used to investigate the problem. It is found that for two dimensional model, there exists four coupled longitudinal waves namely longitudinal wave (P), longitudinal thermal wave (T),...
